Celebrating Sikh Heritage Month, we're highlighting the work of Gurmeet Dhillon from CUPW.

Arriving in Canada in 2001, Gurmeet worked at several odd jobs before securing employment with Canada Post in 2005. In his country of origin, Gurmeet earned a master's degree in Agricultural Science and worked in the private sector as a sales officer. Later, he worked in the public sector with the Punjab government as an agriculture development officer.

Gurmeet views his Sikh heritage as a foundation of hard work, resilience, and a commitment to making positive contributions to society—values that have influenced his professional journey. The Sikh philosophy of service and dedication to community well-being is one that he demonstrates in the many roles he has occupied.

Inspired by brothers Sanjay Sapra and brother Abdi Hagi Yusuf, Gurmeet became an active member of CUPW. In 2014, Gurmeet was appointed to represent CUPW-Toronto Region members needing accommodation by helping to facilitate their reintegration back into the workplace. As a fast learner, he quickly became skilled at arguing grievances as he represented members at arbitration securing many milestone decisions in the Toronto Region. In May 2015, Gurmeet launched a successful bid for the position of regional union representative and won. He effectively served the Toronto Region membership for two terms ending in 2023.

In May 2023, Gurmeet took on the challenge of running for the role of Regional Education Organization Officer and was once again successful. He is currently serving the members of the Metro Toronto Region in that role.
