The gala that recognizes human rights, Indigenous rights, equity and social justice work

A Black trade unionist, community organizer and activist, Bromley Lloyd Armstrong was a pivotal figure in the early anti-discrimination campaigns in Ontario that led to Canada’s first anti-discrimination laws. As a self-described “blood and guts” ally of the working poor, he demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the trade union movement and the battle against disadvantage and discrimination. For more than six decades, Armstrong worked for human rights, helping to generate civic and government support for racial equality and advocating for human rights reforms in public policy.

Since 2005, inspired by Bromley Lloyd Armstrong, Labour Community Services (LCS) and the Equity Committee of Toronto & York Region Labour Council have recognized leaders, within the Labour Movement and community, who have also fought for human rights, Indigenous rights, equity and social justice.

Throughout the years, funds raised from the gala have gone towards supporting anti-racism work led by LCS and the Labour Council. Campaigns such as the Refugee Next Door, Yes, It Matters: Addressing Systemic Racism, and Anti-Racism in Unions, were launched and continue to be active today. In 2024, the Eyes on the Prize project brought together Black union leaders to discuss how collective support in the fight against anti-Black racism could be strengthened.
