Labour Community Services and the Equity Committee of Toronto & York Region Labour Council proudly hosted the 16th annual Bromley Lloyd Armstrong Gala and Awards on May 26, 2021.

It was an inspiring night recognizing the hard work and dedication of labour activists and unions fighting for social justice. Together, we heard from our guest speakers, Jan Simpson and Larry Rousseau, enjoyed special performances, and presented this year's Bromley Lloyd Armstrong Awards.

Inspired by the spirit of Dr. Bromley Lloyd Armstrong, we celebrated being "agents of change" and continue to follow in his footsteps for generations to come.

Program Highlights

 

Guest Speaker: Jan Simpson, National President, Canadian Union of Postal Workers
Jan Simpson was the first racialized person to be elected to CUPW’s national office in 2011 as a Union Representative for Organizing. She was then elected First National Vice-President, and in 2019, Jan made history when she became the first Black woman to lead a national union in Canada.

Guest Speaker: Larry Rousseau, Executive Vice-President, Canadian Labour Congress

Larry Rousseau has a long history of trade union and political activism, particularly on issues like labour relations, health and safety, human rights, and equity. His involvement in the LGBTQ2SI, anti-racism and peace movements have been an integral part of his engagement and commitment to social justice.

Bromley Lloyd Armstrong Awards
Bromley Lloyd Armstrong demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the trade union movement and community activism, battling against injustice and discrimination. This year, an individual, as well as a local union, will receive the prestigious Bromley Lloyd Armstrong Award for demonstrating excellence in labour equity, human rights and inclusion.
