COMMUNICATION AND UWGT LABOUR LIASION COORDINATOR

Labour Community Services (LCS) is a project of the Toronto and York Region Labour Council in
partnership with United Way of Greater Toronto (UWGT). LCS works to build partnerships between
unions, United Ways, and communities to address social issues such as poverty, the need for good jobs,
affordable housing, effective social infrastructure, and strong public services.

The role:

Labour Community Services is looking for a full-time communicator with strong stakeholder relations
experience. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who can think creatively and strategically of
ways to raise the organization’s profile with its target audiences and the public at large. They are able to
juggle many priorities comfortably, re-prioritizing as necessary to meet the demands of an ever-changing
landscape.

While the incumbent will be a full-time employee of Labour Community Services, reporting to its
Executive Director, they will be required to work closely with the United Way of Greater Toronto.

Key accountabilities:

• To create, implement, oversee, and evaluate communications plans and programs for Labour
Community Services that effectively describe and promote the organization’s vision and mission
• To act as a liaison between the Toronto and York Region Labour Council, affiliated unions, and
the United Way of Greater Toronto

Communication responsibilities:

• Conceptualize, plan, and execute communications strategies to support the work of the
organization and its goals
• As the “writer-in-chief”, the incumbent will draft effective communications that are tailored to
specific audiences and platforms
• Manage all social media. This includes writing a social media plan and policies explaining what
LCS’ goals are fostering a community online and working to achieve those goals
• Manage the maintenance of website content, building on the foundation that has already been
laid. The candidate should be able to assess current website content, suggest ways to improve and
create that content
• Manage the creation – from planning to printing – of LCS’ publications, including the annual
report, brochures, flyers and more
• Write speaking notes for Executive Director, when required
• Proactive and reactive media relations. Must be able to write a press release and successfully
pitch stories to local media
• Graphic design is a big asset. If no previous graphic design experience, the candidate should be
comfortable giving vendors direction to implement the brand

UWGT responsibilities:

• Support and enhance the unionized accounts during the UWGT campaign
• Work towards building joint union/management fundraising campaigns in unionized workplaces
• Recruit, train, and support Labour activists who act as speakers, allocations, and/or campaign
volunteers
• Provide education services, as required
• Enhance the partnership between Toronto and York Region Labour Council and the United Way
of Greater Toronto

Terms of Employment:

This is a full-time permanent position in the bargaining unit of the USW local 7536 and reports to the
Executive Director of LCS. A competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package are included.

Qualifications:

• Three to five years’ experience in communications, public relations, journalism, graphic design
and/or equivalent experience in a non-profit or public sector strongly desired
• Experience in WordPress publications (or similar), Facebook, Twitter, and social media platforms
• Demonstrated media relations experience, including ethnocultural media relations
• Excellent written (samples must be provided) and oral skills
• Proven interpersonal and organizational skills
• Appreciation of United Way fundraising and allocations procedures
• Significant experience with advocacy, volunteer management, voluntary sector, and popular
education skills
• Ability to work under pressure, to be a team player, and to be responsive
• Willingness to have a flexible work schedule including some early morning, late evening, split
shifts, and weekends
• Superior project management and time management skills
• Detail-oriented, ability to set priorities, manage several projects at once and meet deadlines under
pressure
